OHSAS 18001 Compliance and Auditing Services
OHSAS 18001 is not a Standard the way ISO 9000/9001 and ISO 14000/14001 are. OHSAS 18001 is a health and safety assessment series published by a British standards institution. Since there is no official ISO health and safety management standard, OHSAS 18001 has achieved a certain level of international acceptance. But it has not gone through the exhaustive development and deliberative ISO process that involves all affected stakeholders worldwide. Therefore, OHSAS 18001 is not, properly speaking, a Standard, but actually a “specification.”
OHSAS 18001 is part of OHSAS 18000, the generic name given to a family of international specifications developed to provide a framework around which an occupational health and safety management system can effectively be implemented. OHSAS 18000 is comprised of two parts:
- OHSAS 18001: Occupational health and safety management systems specification
- OHSAS 18002: Guidelines for the implementation of OHSAS 18001
OHSAS 18001 requires companies to identify health and safety hazards and risks associated with their operations, eliminate or at least control those hazards and risks, and demonstrate improvement by minimizing and/or eliminating work related injuries and illnesses.
OHSAS 18001 enables companies to continually maintain and improve upon their health and safety regulatory compliance posture, assure conformance to a stated policy, and demonstrate compliance through third-party certification.
What is a management system?
A Management System is a framework based on a structured integration of best practice into operating systems, frequently built around the Plan-Do-Check Act cycle.
The best companies work as complete units with a shared vision. This may encompass information sharing, benchmarking, team working, and working to the highest quality and safety principles. A management system helps a company achieve these goals through such things as optimization of processes, management focus, employee involvement, and discipline of management thinking.
