PPE Hazard Assessment Services
OSHA has promulgated regulations covering the general provision, use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE). OSHA’s PPE standards require the development and implementation of a PPE program to increase individual safety while performing potentially hazardous job tasks or while in a hazardous area.
OSHA PPE Standards include:
29 CFR 1910.132 – General Requirements
29 CFR 1910.133 – Eye and Face Protection
29 CFR 1910.134 – Respiratory Protection
29 CFR 1910.135 – Head Protection
29 CFR 1910.136 – Foot Protection
29 CFR 1910.137 – Electrical Protective
29 CFR 1910.138 – Hand Protection
To identify hazards and determine if and when PPE is required, a PPE hazard assessment must be performed on each job task and facility area. However, before requiring employees to wear PPE to protect themselves from identified hazards, companies must first evaluate the implementation and use of available and feasible engineering and administrative controls to eliminate the hazards. If these types of controls are not feasible or not effective in eliminating the hazards, then PPE must be assigned and used.
If performed properly, a PPE hazard assessment will determine the appropriate PPE that must be worn while performing job tasks or while working in a hazardous area. A PPE hazard assessment includes an evaluation to: 1) identify the tasks that possess potential hazards, 2) identify the type, severity and likelihood of the hazards, 3) identify engineering and administrative controls, and 4) determine appropriate PPE to be used.
