Process Safety Management Services
Unexpected releases of highly hazardous toxic, reactive and flammable liquids and gases from processes has been an issue for many years. Regardless of the industry that uses these highly hazardous chemicals, there is a potential for an accidental release anytime they are not properly controlled, creating the possibility of a disaster.
A process is any activity or combination of activities including any use, storage, manufacturing, handling or the onsite movement of highly hazardous chemicals. A process includes any group of vessels which are interconnected or separate vessels which are located such that a highly hazardous chemical could be involved in a potential release.
To ensure safe and healthful workplaces, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has promulgated the Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals Standard found at 29 CFR 1910.119, better known as Process Safety Management (PSM). The PSM Standard contains requirements for the management of hazards associated with highly hazardous chemicals and establishes a comprehensive management program that integrates technologies, procedures, and management practices.
The PSM Standard is Divided Into the Following 14 Elements:
- Process Safety Information
- Process Hazard Analysis
- Operating Procedures
- Training
- Contractors
- Mechanical Integrity
- Hot Work
- Management of Change
- Incident Investigation
- Compliance Audits
- Trade Secrets
- Employee Participation
- Pre-startup Safety Review
- Emergency Planning and Response
There is a codependency of the various PSM Standard elements and all of the elements listed above are interlinked and interdependent of each other, as so far as, each element utilizes information from other elements in order to be completed.
