UST and AST Closure and Installation Services
Underground Storage Tanks (UST) are tanks and their associated underground piping that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground, and are normally horizontal. USTs are generally classified as one of three different types: 1) steel or aluminum tank, 2) composite overwrapped tank – a metal tank with a fiberglass, carbon fiber or a plastic compound overwrap for corrosion protection, 3) composite tank – a fiberglass or carbon fiber tank with a metal or polymer liner.
Aboveground Storage Tanks (AST) operate under no (or very little) pressure, distinguishing them from pressure vessels. ASTs come in all shapes and configurations based on their intended use, such as vertical and horizontal, open top and closed top, flat bottom and cone bottom, slope bottom and dish bottom, etc.
UST and AST failures can and do occur, and sometimes it’s necessary to remove and replace the tank. Tank removal and replacement must be performed in accordance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
